Copenhagen: A Rapidly Growing Tourism Destination

Copenhagen has emerged as one of Europe’s fastest-growing tourism hotspots, according to the Global Destination Cities Index published by Mastercard. Between 2009 and 2016, the Danish capital experienced an impressive 8.1% increase in visitors, placing it among the top destinations in Europe.

Fast-Growing Peers

In comparison, other cities have shown even more significant growth. Bucharest leads the pack with a 10.4% increase, followed closely by Lisbon at 10.2%. Other notable cities include Sofia and Warsaw (both 9.4%), Budapest (8.6%), Hamburg (8.4%), and Moscow (8.2%).

Visitor Insights

In 2016, 1.66 million travelers visited Copenhagen, with a remarkable 96% of them being tourists. These visitors contributed nearly 6 billion kroner to the local economy, with 28% of their spending going toward shopping. The growth trend is expected to continue, with a projected 4.5% increase in visitors this year.

Global Rankings

Despite its relatively smaller visitor count, Copenhagen ranks 66th globally in terms of tourist arrivals. The city continues to grow in popularity, even as destinations like Bangkok (nearly 20 million visitors) and London (19 million) remain at the top of the list.

Holiday Home Recognition

In addition to its rising tourism, Copenhagen’s influence extends beyond the city limits. A luxury summerhouse in Marielyst was recently awarded the title of Best Family-Friendly Holiday Home at the European Holiday Home Awards. This expansive property accommodates up to 32 guests and features amenities such as two indoor pools, a sauna, a pool table, a basketball court, and a mini-golf course, available for rent through Novasol.

Conclusion

Copenhagen’s growth in tourism underscores its appeal as a vibrant city rich in culture, shopping, and activities. With continued investment in its tourism infrastructure, the Danish capital is poised to attract even more visitors in the years to come, solidifying its status as a premier European destination.
